Remembering Members Who Have Passed:
09/05/2011 With the passing of Dave Gumz the GGLS has lost another of its links to the past. Dave joined the GGLS in the early 70’s at the urging of Herman Volz. They were working together and Herman saw that this mustached, pipe smoking, Hon3 enthusiast would be an ideal live steamer. After all he was building mechanical devices for the scientists of the Lawrence Rad Lab, in a group called Special Projects. Dave brought an unflagging enthusiasm to the GGLS through the years building two fine steam locomotives, many cars and a Sacramento Northern interurban double car set. Dave was one of the good guys, walking the track when he’d arrive and just fixing what ever problem he would find. He took a scientific approach to his work running exhaustive tests on various components and bringing improvements to the hobby, helping his club mates and through contributions he made to articles for Modeltec Magazine. Dave was a very classy guy. A rather dashing TR6 owner, that would always drive his restored car to the Concours. His interests in art and music as well baseball filled out his persona, being a very interesting conversationalist and entertaining company. Dave is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Sharon Gumz 04/20/2011 Just got word from Dick Bartel that long time GGLS member Frank Mandel has passed away. Frank joined our club in the 70's and built 3 engines. First being a 1" 4-4-4 that is now owned by Pierre Maurer, #2 engine was a 1/2"Milwaukee Electric now owned by Walt Oellerich and #3 engine was a 1 1/2" pacific that is undergoing a major overhaul. We send our condolences to his wife Beverly and his family. Frank always had a smile and helped out at the track in his earlier days as a member. Speaking for myself I will truly miss him . Bob Morris ............. 02/20/2010 We recieved word that Steve Waterfall died this morning. He had done so many things that made Portola Valley and Alpine a functioning club. We will be greatly missed. 11/03/2009 We recieved word that long time member of both GGLS and PVLS Jim Marino passed away. He and Dick Thomas started there dental careers about the same time I believe and were very close friends.
